Nuns can be either Catholic or Episcopal. Friars are mendicant members of Catholic Religious orders, commonly Augustinians, Carmelites, Dominicans, or Franciscans, who have chosen not to live the cloistered life of a monk, but to seek a life of community service, living on charitable donations. The word means "Brother" and if derived, through French, from the Latin "frater".
