I am not sure if you meant this question in the past tense "how did" or the present "how do". Perhaps they are both the same question. I became a singer by, at an early age, begining to sing and learn songs. I sang in a church choir all through school, as well as singing in the school choir in Jr. and Senior high as college. I also sang in community choirs and community musical theatre productions. In college I took class voice lessons and then continued with private lessons for 7 years. I have sung in churches almost constantly for about 45 years and have also performed with my husband in local concerts. I sing classical, folk, broadway and little country. Nowadays, I do it for fun only. I used to sing for weddings quite a bit when I was younger. Hope this helps.

Take singing lessons and if you have it you have it if you dont you dont.
If you can already sing I would still take singing lessons, just get your voice up to par.
American Idol is one way, making a demo tape and sending it in to radio stations (no guarentee they'll listen, but worth a try). Book concerts places so people can hear you, just get as much publicity as you can and see where that goes.
Good luck!

First, devolop good ear training, pitch recognition and vocal technique via coaching, then learn individuality on your own.
