If you have a list of things you want sorted, you can copy it and paste it into an Excel worksheet, then use the sort function, and then copy the list back into Word. It will be in the form of a table.

If you have it in a Word table, select the entire table.
Click Table on the menu bar
click Sort

Now you have to indicate on which column you want the data sorted. For example, if you do not have headers, and Column A contains last names, you would sort on Column A.

If you had headers, you would indicate that you have headers, then sort on the appropriate header - example, Lastname.
