I'll give you the context so you can see the difference):
Most people shop on saturdays - La mayorÃa de la gente compra los sábados.
Few people are waiting for the bus - Pocas personas están esperando el autobus
Italian people like pizza - A la población italiana les gusta la pizza
The most common is gente.

La gente -- only use this when you are referring to a large group of people in general, such as "the people liked the concert". You can only ever use the word 'gente' along with 'la'. Which means you can't say "hay gente" (there are people) or "cuanta gente?" (how many people), etc.... it always needs to be "la gente"
Personas -- usually used when talking about a smaller group of people. you can use 'personas' in a lot more ways, such as "hay muchas personas aqui!" (there are a lot of people here!), or "cuantas personas estan aqui?" (how many people are here?) or "la persona que me dijo...." (the person who told me...)
Pueblo- this is like a people group. So "el pueblo cubano" (the cuban people), el pueblo americano, etc.

*gente which means just people
*personas: the plural of person
*populacion: population
