Is it possible he is still teething? He has never been a chewer before. He'll even start nibbling on my fingers when I pet him. Not hurting, just nibbling. What would bring this on?

He is neutered and hopefully not bored. We go on walks twice a day and have tons of toys that he plays with along with other dogs as well. I was just curious because up to this point, he has never been a chewer on anything except his bone. He's never tried to pick anything else up recently.

Chewing is healthy for dogs as it keeps their teeth and gums in shape. One year old is a time when dogs do a lot of chewing though they may be like that for years to come. Ask your Vet or a reputable pet store what treats they would recommend for your Yorkie and how often to give them. My three dogs have inedible chew toys always available as well as "Kongs", hard biscuits for occasional treats. There are so many good and safe chew toys. Your dog is exercising his new set of teeth. Not to worry.

Your one year old Yorkie, is trying to sharpen his teeth, and will chew on anything it can get. I have found a little rawhide bone is very beneficial for the teething and sharping time in your "Little Ones" life. This may last sometime, like a year or more. But unless there appetite is decreased, not drinking, or laying around. I wouldn't think there would be a health issue.

Some dogs mature later than others, as do cats. For example, my kitten is a little over 7 months old and he bites EVERYTHING. We asked the vet about it and she looked at his teeth, and said they were still quite small for his size, and that he was still teething. So yes, your dog's teeth are starting to grow in.

He has the urge to bite! Start telling your dog in a firm voice "NO" when he is chewing on something besides his dog toys and treats. When he actually starts to chew when you are gone, start punishing him.

If he doesn't eat stuff just chew it you can leave cardboard boxes around, buy kongs and stuff them with peanut butter and put them in the freezer--it keeps them busy. There's treat balls that when they work them treats fall out, lots of things to keep them busy.

hes a Yorkie... they were bred to hunt and kill small critters.. he is doing what comes naturally...
he could be teething - but I suspect that its related to boredom to his mental needs not being met... is he neutered?? if not do that ASAP (unneutered males typically experiece more issues like this)
take him to Obedience lessons to stimulate his mind..
spray things with BITTER APPLE to deter him

if your dog has never chewed before it is probably a tooth ache
