Say your fiancee got you a ring and paid for it with a loan. A few years later his parents pay off the loan.

I would say that a ring is just an outward sign of your love for someone, but the only thing that really matters in the love you have internally for someone. So if someone helps to pay off the debt of the ring its just saying that they want to help with that love you two share and that if they can do this by helping you eliminate stress by paying off the loan then its a great thing.

Ah...I'm sorry...but yes, that would bother me for more reason that one. The first symbol of the two of you as adults starting their lives together should have been something he could afford. Otherwise, he's not starting off too well as a provider. Plus I would feel like I owed them something and it would be a blow to my pride. Honestly I think he sounds like a silly kid for getting into debt instead of saving for the ring and paying for it outright, which makes me think you are both just kids and too young for marriage.

Sorry, I'm sure that made you feel crappy and mad but that is the impression of an outsider, which is what you asked for.

I think it would be grown up and meaningful if he were to pay the money back as soon as he is able.

The ring is just the symbol - would it mean less if he had given you a heirloom ring passed down from other family members that he didn;t have to pay for at all? Probably not - it is the meaning, and not the final price tag, that matters. I think it is wonderful that his parents wanted to help out in such a lovely way!

do you think it diminishes the meaning if a not-so-close-a-friend pay off your wedding gown?
this is my dilemma (check my q) but i think the rest of the gang here is correct, these are but symbols of the wedding, the important thing is the marriage, the union of the 2 of you.
prayer of blessings to your wedding!

You guys aren't even married and he has already developed poor financial habits?

I honestly would be more concerned about my future with someone like that then the quantitative "meaning" of the ring.

Well, it would make me respect him a little less. He really shouldn't have gotten into debt over something like a ring.... that wasn't very smart of him.

No, you wouldnt think less if he had a family ring, why should you if they help him pay for the ring.

No, it just diminishes the debt. What a lovely gift.
