Not having the "proper back pressure" is the most ridiculous and preposterous reasoning I've ever heard in my life. Unbelievable.
On the the question. The answer all depends upon the year of your vehicle. If it's '95 or older and pre OBD-II, you can hack off the cat and it'll run just fine. It's not legal to do, but it'll run okay.
If the truck is '96 or newer with OBD-II, removing the cat will cause you to continually kick out downstream catalyst efficiency codes because... Well because the removed cat won't be working very efficiently. However, there are O2 simulators available to trick the PCM into thinking the cat is in place. E-mail me for more info if interested.

It won't run properly. If you want to get better gas mileage, put a high-flow catalytic converter in there. It's almost like not having one at all, but will keep you legal.
If I'm not mistaken, if your truck has less than 50k, you can't replace the cat with anything other than the OEM part.

Yes you can, i have a 1987 Ranger with a 2.9 and I've been running mine since 1999 with the catalytic converter empty. Just take it off and ajm a pipe through it to empty it out.

For any computer controlled vehicle tampering with emissions equipment could get yourself in ultra hot water as further proof is if you live in a state that has emissions testing you could automatically flunk the test for hacking the catalytic converter as if yours is bad replacing it with an aftermarket piece is far cheaper than getting yourself in ultra hot water.

I live in an area without emissions laws, "rural Arizona" as such I have removed cats on many vehicles. It takes a slew of parts to make your unit function properly w/o a cat but if all out performance is yuor goal it must come off!

Better to get a replacement convertor if yours is shot - too many problems with keeping the engine running right if you don't replace it. The price of replacements is not that bad, they're not in the hundreds of $$ like the old days. FlowMaster makes a really good high-flow catalyst that only runs about 180 bucks.

It may actually improve performance and possible gas mileage, however, it is ILLEGAL!!!
Not to mention, why would you want to pollute this beautiful earth intentionally just to save a nickel per week????
the fines for tampering with the emissions on your vehicle can reach to the tens of thousands!!!

Not only is it illegal but your gas mileage will be effected. It will also effect sensors in the engine and set off an engine code.

you won't have the proper back pressure...probably won't hurt your gas milage...however....it is illegal to do this. Odds are you won't get caught but if you do it is a heavy fine. And you will have to do it yourself because no self respecting shop will remove this item....can you say up to $10k fine? If your converter is bad I'd recommend just replacing it.

You can run with out a kat,but you will never pass inspection. And if the law ever pulls you over and checks, and sees that your not running kats, you will be cited.
