Before you bring this dog home make absolutely sure it matches your families personality and lifestyle. The main reason dogs go to the shelter is because of these differences. Read up on that particular type or dog or dogs.
Jack Russels are smart but very hyper and need someone with them all day (or they can get destructive). The hound is quite active too and wants to hunt. Actually both are hunting dogs. Russels with gophers, ground hogs, and rodent types and the Basset with foxes, cats, and rabbits.
You are going to have a dog that needs to roam and also stretch their legs (lots of walks and activity) and ways they can use their hunting skills. Otherwise you will have an unhappy dog or one that destroys your home and yard.
Other tips is to do lots of training. You may want to get into several classes (beginners, intermediate, and advanced) as you will need it. If you do not have the time for that pay for a trainer to come to your home and work with your dog. It helps in every aspect of your relationship with your dog.
My other tip. Bond right away with your dog. If that means spending a week of quality time, just do it, you dog will be a better family member if you do.
Good Luck. What is the name you are picking out?

Number 1 thing to do is ensure it has all the necessary vaccinations, is wormed etc. Make sure you have everything you need for the dog such as bed, bowls, leads etc. Get the dog into obedience classes straight away and make sure everyone in the family is involved in the dogs training. Do not play 'tug-of-war' type games with the dog as these encourage agression. Most important love your dog and play with it often!

Basic obedience training for any dog is a good start. Both hounds and terriers can be stubborn and opiniated and everybody in the home should make sure they don't let the dog train them.
