I have a 2000 Neon (115,000 miles and counting) and it has been a great car. Of course, as some have mentioned, you have to take care of it.

Maintenance is the key to any car lasting. Of course you are going to have a few problems here and there, and you should expect that, machines do wear out and break occasionally. (I am a mechanic, I can attest to that!)

Most important on these little cars is the regular maintenace (tune-up/oil change/etc..) and keeping up with the timing belt replacement schedule.

Most people do not pay attention to the maintenance schedule and drive the poor cars into the ground with little or no maintenance. When the cars end up breaking, they get called a piece of junk.

I recommend using Mobil 1 5w-30 oil, change it and the filter every 6,000 miles. Check your air filter (K&N works good too) twice a year.

Use factory recommended parts like Champion spark plugs (although I hate Champions, they work the best in my car. I tried all the fancy ones from Bosch, Autolite etc and found out that the Neon motor runs best with Champions). Check your plug wires regulary, (don't buy the cheapest set, but you don't need the most expensive set either).
MAINTENANCE - It makes a big difference!

I own two dodge neons, a 95 and a 96, love them both. Some folks do complain about head gaskets, and that was a problem on some of the early production models (it was actually a design flaw), but the upgrade kit found on most newer models fixes that particular problem just fine.

As far as maintenence is concerned thus far the two neons have by far the best record, the only "major" repairs I've had to do to either of them is fix the instrument panels - the speedometers have a tendancy to work intermittenly on the older neons when they get up there in mileage, but all it takes is a few minutes with a screwdriver and a soldering iron to fix this problem permanently. Other than that the only "major" repair I've had with either was to replace the O2 sensors in the 96 neon. That only took a socket wrench, a crescent wrench and about 15 minutes of my time. They have both run great with just regular maintenance.

So all in all I'd have to say I'm very impressed with the dodge neon, and when it comes time to buy another used car I will certainly be looking to find a third.

I own/have owned four Neons - '95 Sport,'01 R/T,'03 R/T,'05 SRT-4. Our '95 was wrecked in '01. Although many report having trouble with oil leaks and head gaskets, my '95, which was one of the first, developed none of these problems. Neon brakes and handling are better than other domestic and foreign cars competing in the same market. Neons are practically a cult car. Therefore parts and performance enhancements will be available for the foreseeable future. Enjoy your car!

If you take care of it they will last. If you abuse it they will break.
