if they were qualified for the job, absolutely.
it is illegal to deny someone a job based soley on their religion, or lack of religion.

Yes. Have in the past. Some were good workers some were not...funny thing, kind of like Christians and Muslims I have hired, some worked hard some did not.......I am Christian.....the Truth is in the person.
If your question is to say Christians will discriminate against Atheist. Some will many won't. Pretty much the same as Atheist.
A side from the question, based on responses in this forum I would not like my chances with either side of being hired by what people say in here.

It depends, the final decision would not come down to their religion. I am a Christian, but many of my friends are atheists, and I don't think that affects how they are in the work field. If all they did was express their view on atheism and criticize others instead of doing theirt job, then no. Or if the job was something related to religion. But in any normal cirumstance, I would not even consider it as a factor in hiring them, so yes, I would employ an atheist.

It is illegal to even ask that question.
Any religious discrimination in hiring violates fair hiring practices. Although really an Atheist would not apply to work in a Christian book store and most Christians would not be looking for employment at metaphysical shops.

i would like to know why it would be a question at an interview, wouldn't that fall in to a category of discrimination? politics, religion, ethnic back ground, sex, sexual preference etc...have no place in any work force, i would only employ a person suitable for the position that met with the jobs requirements and had the companies interest at heart.

So long as he/she was qualified for the job, yes. Religious preference (or lack of) shouldn't enter in deciding whether or not a person is good for a job. Unless, of course, the Atheist in question was trying to become a Pastor of a church. Then, it would factor in.

If it came up in an interview, I would have to think about it. That sort of thing would never come up naturally in that situation, so I'd guess that there was some greater context to it, such as extreme activism etc. In that case, I'd have to consider whether such activity would effect their commitment to their job. If I came to the conclusion that it would, I think I'd have adequate cause to look elsewhere.
Of course, this wouldn't just go for atheism.

There is nothing wrong with it.
Who knows, maybe I would even be able to develop a stong, good friendship with him/her. I would try to explain to them how wonderful God truly is, but repect their opinion and wishes, and let them make up their own minds.
I don't hate atheists, and I don't feel like I have to force them to believe in God. I only hope to give them my own experience as a Christian, not the cliche' stuff, and let them decide.
** But I seriosuly doubt that you'd get work in a church!

If they qualified for the job, why not?
What jobs would require being a theist in order to do them? Other than specifically religious jobs like clergy or choir director or religious school teacher, I can't think of any jobs for which being a theist would make one more qualified than an atheist.

Religious beliefs have nothing to do with employment and how one performs at their job. In Australia it is illegal for an employer to ask a prospective employee this question or any to do with the individuals spiritual beliefs, this seems obvious since it has nothing to do with the job.

im an atheist but i wouldnt favor an atheist over a religious person...
the one who i think has most potential will get hired... and not based on religious concerns... unless you are making a church business, an atheist like marjoe gortner will make more money.
