These rafters are 7" and the metal
ties have rusted through, so the
floor is not solid. Thanks for your help. George

if your talking about joist blocks to help with squeeking just replace with wood goes diagonaly from joist to joist get at home depot
if your talking about the beam or column you must replace with steel for column or wood for beam

first thing. they are floor joists. rafters are on your roof. Sounds like you have 2 x 8 joists. you can cut up a 2 x 8 for solid blocking and nail them to the joists instead of using the metal bracing. this will be stronger. the pieces will be 14 3/8" if the framing is 16" on center.

Go to a home department store, lowe's, home-depot, etc., They sell steel support beams that go from the floor up. Good Luck!
