Other than recovery after a surgery and building muscles. What are some reasons that steroids would be taken?

Steroids are used to reduce inflammation by reducing the response of the immune system. An example might be treatment to lessen an allergic reaction or response to poison ivy. Steroids are frequently used in the process of treating auto-immune diseases, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn's Disease, and Multiple Sclerosis. These are diseases that cause the immune system to react against ones own body, as it would against any infection or foreign body, thereby causing destruction of various tissues. In short, steroids are used to decrease the body's defense mechanisms. Incidentally, this can mean one may be more prone to infections as a side effect.

They are used for inflammatory conditions like severe Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis and also sometimes for Orthopaedic problems.
