You can not consider yourself an atheist until you have researched the other religions because yo have to 'build' yourself. You simply cannot say you are unreligious.

In History we were tlaking about poly-,mono-,and atheism. My teacher made this comment.

Not really. Being an atheist is not simply being "unreligious." Being an atheist means you believe in NO GOD whatsoever. I believe in God but am not religious. Therefor, I am not an atheist.

No, I can't agree with that statement. Basically because it's a generalization... and as we all know, something always comes along to mess up our generalizations. But, the problem with that is, all of the Atheists I have ever met have studied religions... most were once religious themselves.

And a person can believe in such things and be UNreligious, in the modern sense of the word. When someone says Religion, they think of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Wicca, Hinduism, even Satanism. And many people have a belief in something Supernatural and don't adhere to Any of these things.

I would strongly encourage anybody with any interest in their own belief system to research it carefully. I did and it made me a lot happier and healthier.

But - go back and ask your teacher this - Can you consider yourself a Christian if you haven't researched at least the other 4-5 major religions? I'll bet he/she will turn green.

Atheists seem to be held to a higher standard in that regard. We're expected to be scientists, know all points of major religions, apparently be fluent in the bible, and provide proof on all points.

Personally, I do research many other religions because I happen to find it fascinating. But I don't believe that it's a requirement to deciding that you don't want to believe in imaginary friends.

That should be correct. However, do Catholics research Buddhism before choosing Catholicism? Vice versa? Has each person researched every religion before choosing the right one for them? Unfortunately, No. It doesn't happen. Most choose the path of their parents.

I don't agree with her. That is how it should be ..but often isnt. If you don't believe there is a God then why would you have to research how to practice your faith? There isn't anything to research.

I know what I believe and haven't researched ALL other religions. Some I have because I was interested but I don't need another opinion to validate my own.

Does your teacher make the same assertion about being religious? To me, it seems that someone who chooses a religion has an even greater obligation to know all of the other faiths they reject as opposing their own.

i disagree
i find it possible that people need something tanginable before they can accept it as real and i respect and understand that

i do however feel that many ( not all ) atheists are put off from believing in God due to one faith .. therefore accept that all must be the same

Sure, I agree - you cannot write off every God until you make an informed, educated decision. That requires boning up on all religions.

Thats the problem with religions - they write off every other god in existence, in the erroneous beleif that only their God is real and matters.

One cannot truly say they dont believe in God unless they have researched His word, and pray and ask for themselves. Isnt that how we learn about anything is thru study??????
Funny part is, whenmost face death, they cry out to God,why? cuz down deep they know its truth, just dont want to believe it. it messes up how they want to live. but I believe all know on some level, or they wouldnt cry out for God on their deathbeds, and then its too late.
How can you check to see if what God says is coming true if yo dont know what He says. It is all coming thru. Bible prophecy being fullfilled daily.
Lets just pray all will check for themselves and find out in time.
