"There are no true atheists because when they hit their thumb with a hammer they say 'Oh God!'"... and similar nonsense.

Hard to accept? Nonsense. I'm a believer with quite a few atheist friends. I believe; they don't. Simple as that.

Because they give credence to the Shakespearean adage among others:

"I think thou dost protest too much" (paraphrase)

One does not go were he is not interested or protest something that is not an issue in his heart.

If a grown adult said he did not like playing in the sand box like a child but every time he had some free time he was in the sandbox playing like a kid his words belie his true heart of like and curiosity regardless of his his words or his apparent biological maturity beyond childish things. The only atheist that think theist find anything a certain way is because they are in the sandbox with them. If you get to close too the sandbox you are bound to get sand in the eye, and then wonder why sand in the eye hurts so bad. Stay away fom the sandbox and then you won't have to ask why?

You might enjoy this site on Atheism...It has many articles and quotes from famour atheists and jokes etc...

Not being an atheist but not believing in GOD, I can't honestly reply.

I believe in the ONE-ness of all LIFE and ONE (Creator) or the "common denominator" that ALL (CREATION in its diversity" can be reduced to as in Physics....One is numeric, neutral and not gender-based. IT is a mathematical and a scientific concept, not a religious or emotional concept...

I agree with you and I will wait and see what some "theists" say to accepting and "loving" and respecting" and tolerating" others who don't believe as they do....

We will of course get the "pray the Holy Spirit" or "JESUS is the WAY" etc...but It always reminds me of the song by Barry McGuire, the "EVE OF DESTRUCTION", where he says: "Eat you next door neighbour but don't forget to say Grace". or Bomb the sh't out of the Muslims but try and convince them that your God is More POWERFUL than theirs and is the "LOVING" God...or even that "JESUS is LORD or GOD"...

LORD is so lowly for a ONE CREATOR and God is the word for the "god" of a germanic tribe that invaded Rome in the 4th century, the Goths, with their cousins the VISIGOTHs (sons of Goth or God) and the Vandals (who gave us vandalism)...Now that is very "lofty" and "intellectual" and spiritual....

OH well...I said too much all ready...

I have to wonder if they worry what it means by association. If it's possible that someone believes not at all in God, do they then worry about the fragility of their own faith?

As long as everyone believes in God on some level, it's much easier to assert that you believe in God 100%. However, if you admit that certain people don't believe in God at all, you might have to worry that you too have some deep seeded doubt.

Theists just have no sense of humor! Lighten up all you theists!
All these Atheist guys are gonna burn in hell anyway, right? So why not just lie back and be smug? You must be sure your God is gonna beat them up, Boy such a nice God you have there, I think I'll get me one too, maybe if I pray hard enough he'll do for all the gays too?

i cant see someone who has no proof that there isn't a god just concluding there isn't one and shutting out the possibility altogether. atheists aren't even Open to the idea of God right? i find that a little arrogant in the way a person who doesn't know everything to think? so i agree with the way an agnostic believes, waiting for some kind of 'proof' but i dont agree with the belief system of an atheist.

Why do atheist insist that they are the only rational ones. I have no problem with what anyone chooses to believe or not believe. Why do so many on either side come on here only to look for a fight.....what is that about? Name calling is for lack of better words just plain stupid.

because god means a lot to a lot of people. i know that i've had trouble accepting that some people don't believe in god. personally, i kind of feel bad for them. they don't see the light, they don't see the hope and faith that i, personally, invest in god. it's just a bit of pity on my part because they're missing out on something this is so prevalent and powerful...and just so there.

I don't find it hard to accept at all. I find it hard to believe, but - I accept any rational person's decision to have faith ... or not.

That is what makes "free will" and a response to God's love so real....it's a choice.

Otherwise it would not mean as much.

What I wonder is: if you don't believe in God, or that there is some sort of sense and purpose to the universe, what gives you a reason to keep going?
