Looks like all the money owed by the US to the Chinese is started to translate into "stay out of our way". Tonight's report on Lou Dobbs. No link available as the report is still on. What in the world IS the Navy doing, that they can't detect a diesel submarine? Any Navy personnel out there care to comment?

I saw the report. Something is fishy. First off why would our military ever let that info out if it were true? Secondly, a diesel sub, and we can't detect it with a carrier group until it surfaces close to that group implying we will get shot out of the water if we try to do anything. Bullcrap. It sounds like a political ploy in the making. Here's my guess. China has intentions of invading Taiwan, and we are not going to do a darn thing because we owe China too much money. I hope some Navy people post on this question. I want to hear their opinions.

Yak Rider is absolutely correct. Modern diesel boats are super quiet. By the way the diesel engines charge batteries that run quiet electric motors.

This is the biggest non-story I ever heard. Every country's submarines track other's ships for practice. Read "Blind Man's Bluff". US subs went right into Russian harbors and tapped their underwater phone lines plus a bunch of other neat stuff. LOL

Modern US subs make those in any navy look like toys.

Depends on what the details are. I mean, was it running hot? Was it cool and silent? As an Anti-Sub sailor, I can tell you there is alot to consider before jumping to conclusions. Seismic activity? Biologicals? Commercial traffic? New guy on the job, not sure what he was hearing? Also, was this a surface or submarine detection of a sub? There are all kinds of factors to think about, there.

Diesel subs are very quiet, even quieter than some nuclear subs. There are luckily other ways of detecting a submarine. Magnetics, active sonar, sound buoys just to name a couple.

Have you ever engaged in anti-submarine warfare? I have. A well run, well maintained diesel boat is the closest thing to dead silent you'll find in the ocean. Finding them is nothing like hunting old Soviet type II and III nuclear powered subs.

When the Chinese think they can't be detected they'll slip up.

Sounds very sneaky via the us's behalf to me. Something else was behind that story-duh!
