They don't. Even if you tried to make a conscious effort not to study you couldn't (unless you were permanently asleep). We all learn from everything that goes on around us. You may think it's not 'study' but 'study' is a result of curiousity and that is a basic instinct.
Good luck in your eternal studies!

It all depends on the individual and what they want to do, if the study is to go towards getting a good paying job and become qualified in a certain area they could spend years in study, some study will take 1 year others could take up 3 to 4 years, I know one girl who is in her mid 30;s and she has been studying for about 11 years they problems is she never completes any of the courses she starts and just does it to get money off the goverment instead of being a hard worker like the rest of us.

With respect to previous responders, listening and learning are different from studying. Listening is often a passive activity that can lead to learning if followed up on by studying. Studying is taking material and really sounding down the information to "make it your own." We can read a book with little effort but studying a book will provide new insights and notions about the subject matter. We stop doing such due to a variety of reasons such as poor health, depression, time factors then there is that all-encompassing reason to stop studying-death.

Well, one answer, in the UK at least, would be as follows:
School (GCSEs): 11 years
College (A levels): 2 years
University (BA/BSc): 3 years
University (MA/MSc): 1 year
University (PhD): 3 years
------------------------------------------
TOTAL: 20 years
Of course, that assumes you want to become a fully fledged Doctor of Whatever Subject Amuses You. And there's no reason why you can't just decide to go back to uni for another seven years and become a fully trained up Doctor of Something Else That Amuses You. I can't imagine why anyone would do that to themselves, but I'm sure someone out there will have done it...

We never stop learning. Life is a learning curve from birth to death. Whether we actually learn the lessons offered to us though is another matter.........
