I promise this will not go to vote. Remember the days when we all had a flag attached to our cars, trucks, and over bridges How I miss those days and how good it made me feel. This is what I am hoping for but without a crisis to make it happen.

There has been a profound disagreement over the correct response to the attacks. No matter what course the administration took there would have been opposition. The difficulty has been the secret nature of the attacks. Before Pearl Harbor there was a large isolationist faction in the US. No president could get elected, advocating war but after the attack there was almost universal support for war against Japan and ultimately all Axis powers. The difference was that the enemies were nations who declared war. It has been very difficult to develop a meaningful strategy agains attackers who operate in secret without alienating allies. In my opinion the Bush administration could have done things differently to better effect but then some its current supporters would have been opponents.

The problem is ...we are a "fast food", fadish society. We are attracted by the next new attraction way too fast. There is so much to still resolve.
We have border problems that cause terrorists to enter ths country at an alarming rate and we drop everything to delve into the Foley fiasco. Not that it was not a bad thing, but there are bigger fish to fry. Ones that can cause tons more damage. I think border control is the big pink elephant in the room both sides choose to ignore for fear of "hurting someone's feelings".
I do not see a comeback...I see too many "Americans" who want to spend all their time whining about their own country. This only strengthens the terrorists view of us.I amashamed of these people!!
Either we rise up and be The Great Country we were, or we will fall. ...we are darned if we do, and darned if we don't. No one wanted Hitler..after the fact there was outrage--"HOW COULD THIS HAVE HAPPENED???? WERE WAS THE GOOD OLE USA??" But we had Hussein murdering millions and when we try to put a stop to it, it is all of a sudden "none of our business". You cannot have both.....sorry (not really).
Either we are wimps or not. I have a family member who lived over there for years and had to hear of the autrocities of the innocent children gunned down (sometimes in their Mother's arms) and the gassing whole villages. The horror of seeing all this and being helpless is something maybe all people SHOULD HAVE TO EXPERIENCE. To understand how groups become so enamored with their own power they will plot to "take on the infidels" and do away with them all. This family member alluded that anyone who does not believe there were terroists training in Iraq truly has their head up their butt. We need to reunite again and realize the problen is not gone.....just lurking in the shadows.

Honestly, I think that politics is to blame for dividing the unity in America. Not the different views of the Democrats or Republicans, but the sheer vehemence of one party trying to win over the opposing party. "Mudslinging" is what I've heard it called, and it drives a wedge between people so that they are incapable of working together towards a common goal. Unfortunately, some of the most outspoken politicians are also the ones trying to keep their immense power and are doing so by skewing the truth and confusing Americans.

I also feel the unity is coming back, although slowly. I think Americans are getting fed up with all the BS we get from the news, political campaigns, etc.

It seems to me, a Canadian that Americans are severely divided by Democrats and Republican, while my personal preference is irrelevant it is a very large wall in bridging the two types of Americans. From the outside looking in, I see two Americas, Red and Blue, instead of the old fashioned, Red White and Blue is always true. I think that America will start to come together because they are hoping for the best for the future, instead of right now which has always been a problem.

In the beginning, there was Unity. And the country was content, and believed in the Cause and waved the flag fervently. And Media said "Let there be Unrest." And there was Unrest. And the voice of the Minority resounded thunderously, echoing from the televisions and newspapers. And it came to pass that the Minority became the Majority by blaming the Majority with their flag waving for the Unrest. And Media said "Let there be Unity". And the voices of the Minority were still, as the televisions and newspapers heeded them not.

We are unified as a country- the politics has always been in disagreement.. that has never changed and never will. That is why we have two different parties, well 3 now.. because not all Americans are going to agree with what is best for our Country, it has always been that way and will always be that way.. that's another great thing about our Country, not all of our leaders agree- could you imagine with what you believe and what you think if everyone in office felt differently where would our Country be.. it's not a matter or unifying our Country... it's a matter of differences of opinions

America is a society which thrives on individualism. It is tied to our most valued sense of freedom. In a way, we are like the elephant herd, where individuals will forage and feed themselves, and only when danger presents itself will we take point and rally to protect the vulnerable of our group. It is our Independence which serves to create the many paradoxes which complicate life in contemporary-American-society-2006.
The unity which is being referred to here, is always there. I believe what is sought by the question is a different type of unity, a unity which is unprecedented and non-presumptuous. it is hard to say, when you look back on American history, if we have ever had that kind of unity - and so all that means, is that we have to create it, we, us, of this generation, we must consciously seek the type of coexistence that we prefer, and search for cooperative and inclusive means for resolving our differences.

I'm glad it's over and we can get back to the trying at least to behave like an intellectual and philisophically open-minded nation.

All that nationalism and flag waving terrified me.
Fanatical patriotism is uber-dangerous.

We should be members of your family first, then earth humans, then waaay further down the priority line citizens of your state, then Americans in my opinion, then (insert local sports team) fans...

Look at the way everyone jumps us to blame some abstract word for some abstract concept!?!?
Everyone who blamed the (liberals/conservatives) should be on Rikki Lake and shout at each other until a winner is declared.

Bush wasted the unity by invading Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, lied about the reasons he invaded Iraq, and didn't finish the job of bringing to justice those that WERE responsible for 9/11.

Oh, it won't. Trust me, if the Right wouldn't play nice with a the whole nine, what makes you think they'll be any better now that the Congress is in Dem. control? Now I'm not saying all Repubs are like that, I'm just saying that at this point, I wouldn't strike it wise to see that unity coming back anytime soon.
