If you're painting over older high-gloss paint, take extra time to properly prepare the surface by de-glossing or sanding away as much of the sheen as possible — or the new paint will peel.

It depends what type of paint it is. If it's a latex paint, meaning water based, you should be able to. But if it's an Alkyd paint meaning oil based no you can't, and/or wouldn't be a good idea. It's like water and oil don't mix, but separate. Hope that helps.

If the old paint is latex you can put any kind of paint over it no matter what the "sheen" is. Oil paint goes over latex.. but latex won't adhere to an old oil based paint. If in doubt try a small area..if after 24 hours and you scratch it with your finger nail and it stays..your fine. Rule of thumb: Oil over latex, no latex over oil (unless it's a primer), latex over latex (no matter the sheen)!
