The cross was the instrument of torture and death of the Romans.
I am sure that Jesus did not pick it himself as the symbol of his faith. So it was a poor choice made by humans. The early symbol by which Christians identified each other was a fish. Much deeper meaning than an instrument of torture.
For His Second coming we will probably be all wearing an electric chair.

Perhaps many christians view the cross as the instrument that Satan used unsuccessfully to destroy christianity - yet God used it as an instrument on which christians are to nail their sins to be never again remembered by God. So it can be viewed as a beautiful thing because God used Satan's own instrument of torment and death against him. Perhaps it is a symbol of spiritual victory over Satan. After all, though it is Jesus hanging on it, He is bearing the sins of the whole world! This is for many christians a symbol depicting the moment where the sinner and his sin part ways by the power of the shed blood of Jesus Christ. I think when the cross is worn reverently with respect, it should be regarded as a very personal thing between the believer and God. I hope you find some peace of mind with this answer. Good luck and may God richly bless you.

We wear a cross as a reminder of what Jesus did for us. The cross did not kill Jesus, nor did the jews. Jesus says no man could take His life, that He gave it up freely for us. Isnt that a wonderful thing, yet so many reject it.
It isnt showing off to wear a cross. To us ,it is a symbol only of what Jesus did. You dont have to wear one, and wearing one does not get you into heaven. Just a symbol that is imortant to many Christians. Respect Jesus...??? Yes,, for all He has done and still does. many wont wear a cross because they say a cross killed him and that ok. its free choice. But to many, we blieve it is only a symbol , a reminder of what Jesus did on the cross, and we pray to let the world see that we are not ashamed of what all God is done for us, and we are glad to be joyous christians. Sorry if it bothers you, but it is a good thing.
can you imagine our horror at the evil things we see ppl wearing today, or the things with filthy stuff on them? But its a free world. WE can just choose who we follow, God or the devil. no other choice to make. Jesus is coming soon. Just be ready.

Luke 14:27 "And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple."
Although I think that is symbolic, it tells us we need to follow Jesus, and spiritually die to the world and sin, just as He physically died and rose again for us. We wear crosses because we ARE proud that Jesus died for us, and don't forget He also rose again, and is still living today. The cross shows that we were saved by Jesus' dying on the cross, and we will always follow Him.

The Egyptian Ankh and The Cross are Two different things. Christians did not get it from the Egyptians.
The Cross was a form of Roman Torture. It was a very slow execution. We Christians use it as a symbol of His sacrifice for us. Usually it is an empty Cross.

Well, for a long time, the cross was a symbol of guilt, shame, torture and death. It symbolized that anyone not a Roman deserved this sort of death. Roman citizens who broke the law were executed mercifully by the sword. All others who were not Romans, but who were criminals, were tortured in this way.
"Crucifixion was commonly practiced from the 6th century BCE until the 4th century CE, when it was finally abolished in 337 CE by Constantine I. It was intended to serve as both a severe punishment and a frightful deterrent to others and was unanimously considered the most horrible form of death."
When I think of the crucifixion of our Lord in this manner, I recall certain aspects of it, like the words of our Lord: "I thirst", or the fact that the sky grew dark and the temple curtain was torn in two, or Longinus, who said: "Surely, this man Was the Son of God, or that the people went away, beating their breasts...

The crucifixion of Christ is rather central to the Christian faith. The wearing of crosses and the use of them on buildings or sarcophagi are evidenced by not a few archaeological finds. It was, very early on, a symbol by which Christians identified themselves.

I wear a cross to remind me everyday when I look in the mirror that Christ died for my sins. I am not showing it off, or being proud. I do respect the fact that he was tortured and died for me, and I thank Him for that everyday.

My soul shall make its boast in the Lord;
The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
-Psalm 34:2
The point is this, that Christians should be proud of what Jesus did on the cross, because God has provided a for us to be forgiven of our sins. I have been redeemed because Jesus shed His blood because of my wrongdoings, and I am proud of that.
