Do you think that I have a good golf set?

I'm 14 years old with about a 12-13 handicap. I have been playing for only around six months. I am going to try out for the Freshman golf team at my school so I want to know if my clubs are up to par.

Driver: Taylormade r7 460 w/Grafalloy ProLaunch Blue 45 gram shaft, reg. flex.

3 and 5 woods: Taylormade r7 titanium w/Grafalloy Prolaunch Blue 55 gram shafts, reg. flex.

4 and 5 Hybrids: Callaway X-Hybrid w/Grafalloy ProLaunch Hybrid shafts, reg. flex.

6-7 irons: Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Wide Sole Irons w/Grafalloy ProLaunch Iron shafts, reg. flex.

8-PW: Callaway Big Bertha Fusion Irons w/Grafalloy ProLaunch Iron shafts, reg. flex.

51, 56, 61 degree Wedges: Taylormade Rac Black TP w/True Temper GS 75 Wedge Shaft (lightest steel shaft on market, 75 grams.)

Putter: Odyssey Tri-Ball SRT Putter, 34 inches.

Ball: Callaway HX Tour 56

Thank you.

Driver is 10.5 degrees loft.

If you think something is wrong, say so.

Hey Ohio_Golfer34, you're right about the hard work. I caddied, and cleaned clubs at my course for years. I also work at a local Golfsmith.

ksing:

Good grief....you have more money wrapped up in your current set of clubs than I've paid for every set I've owned in my entire life!!!

I would say you're either a very hard working young man to be able to afford clubs like that, or very lucky.

I would say this though. I have a set of Cleveland TA3's that were used that I paid $120.00, my driver is a Cleveland Launcher.....not a 460....a 310! My three wood is a Callaway S2H2 that I've used since I was 17 (I'm 31 now). My putter is a Ping Anser that I've used since I was 17. My lob and sand wedges are Cleveland 588's that have more rust on them than a 1982 Datsun sitting in the snow belt for 10 years.

Oh yeah, my 4 wood is a Tommy Armour 'Exculpator'...you've probably never heard of it, but it's a sweet club. Everything except the driver has a TT X100 shaft.....

My whole set and bag cost me less than your driver.....but I took those clubs and shot even par here in Northeastern Ohio the other day (47 degrees F).

So after all this, my point is twofold.

1) It's not the arrow, it's the indian.

and

2) It's not how awesome your clubs are, but how well they fit your swing that counts.

Good luck, I hope you shoot lights out this year and win state!!!

I don't think so. With a 12-13 handicap, your swing is not developed yet to the point where it's going to stay. As your swing develops and gets better, you need to be able to adjust the fitting of your clubs. With all the $ you have tied up in those, it will be a psychologically tough thing to do to let go of them when a new measurement comes.

With cheap clubs (and really, that's all relative, Tiger could just throw them all in the trash if he felt a change coming...) it's easier to accept the changes that come with improvement and those that come with coaching. When one day, you hit a $5 putter pure, it'll be hard to let go of the expensive one.

I have about a 18 handicap. I play the same driver I bought 23 yrs ago... don't spend the money. One day, I decided I was going to buy whatever putter I would hit the best. I tried out a bunch, without looking at prices, narrowed it down, and at last found the perfect one. I was pleasantly surprised that it was $16. The 2nd thru 5th place putters were all over $100.

Hit what you hit well. And don't ever spend so much that it'll be hard to let go of a club.

Listen, I've worked at a course for a while, and there is a saying I've come up with:

"It's not the clubs in the bag, it's the game in your hands."

These kids on your team aren't going to care if you have unreleased Titlelist blades that are Uranium shafted and a driver with the sweet spot the size of a Chrysler; they want someone who can play. I've seen guys at the course with over a grand in their clubs that won't EVER break 100. And, i've seen guys with rental clubs, a flying lady, and flip flops shoot par.

My point: go out, shoot 70, and let your scorecard say something about who you are as a golfer, not the crap you can pay for.

Yeah, that's a real nice set. I love the r7 driver. The odyssey putters are my favorite too.

Awesome set...a lot better equipment than I had when I was your age...no comparison at all. Callaway, Taylor Made, and Titleist make great products.
