Well, its smaller than a 12 or 16 gauge, but larger than a .410, so it just depends on what you're comparing it to. I prefer a 12 for most of my shotgun hunting, but I know plenty of people who love bird hunting with a 20. I suppose it just depends on what you want to use it for, but a 20 gauge has plenty of power to get the job done in most cases.

The 20 gauge isn't small with todays smokeless powders and "high velocity shot" it gets pretty weak when putting steel shot in for waterfowling though. I use it for upland and most all bird hunting in AZ. (Quail is alot of walking with short shots, so my 20 works well!) I usually use a modified choke and have dropped dove well outside a 20 gauge range, maybe even the 12 gauge range, I don't know how but it happend. It all depends on how you hit them, I switch back between 12 and 20, dove hunting due to how the shells perform in the gun, ie jamming due to the cheap stuff created just for the dove season, or when I feel like it. I wound just as much and kill just as much with both, but the 20 kicks less and is lighter. It was my dad's first deer hunting rifle in Wisconsin and he got a big deer with it. Practice and hit em where it counts and it is a good rifle. It is good for home defense with even birdshot, because it acts as a slug in the confines of your home the shot stays together and hits the guy in a lump. Plus most criminals won't like birdshot to hte face or chest and probably won't fight, if they do just put a couple more into them. Plus the shotgun looks threatening enough and they won't tell if it is 20 or not. I know a person who shoots a 20 gauge single shot from the hip, she loads it fast!!! and hits what she aims for, there isn't much difference there between the 12 and 20 in most defense applications. The only good thing of 12 buckshot or slug is more penetration, but with more kick which wouldn't be good for youth or women shooters.

Loaded with the proper slugs or sabots a 20 gauge shotgun can hit with enough force to take down a deer within 50 yards. If you're going for birds a 20 gauge is more than enough and is lighter on your shoulder. It's also great for target shooting for the same reason.

It looks like he is asking about the firearm not the ammo. For the most part all shotguns are about the same size. Some have shorter barrels and or shorter stocks. A 20 ga shotgun with a 20” barrel will be about the same size as a 12ga shotgun with a 20” barrel. A 12ga and a 20 ga Mossberg 500 shotgun will be the same length but will have a barrel of a smaller diameter. A .410 Saiga is longer then a 20ga Saiga.

Yes it is. But i wouldn't volunteer to take one to the chest.

It is our prefeered Skeet and Trap guage.... It's very controlable compared to a 12 guage. I wouldn't buy one for defense of any kind. Nor would i consider a 410 for anything but an exotic handgun. But the 20 gauge should be a part of every sportmen's (or sportwoman's) collection. It has a place and a purpouse. You should have mentioned what you intended to do with it.

it is smaller than a 12 gauge, but it can so just about anything you want it to, 20 gauge slugs are very effective against deer, 20 gauges can be used to take turkeys and a variety of small game, so it is smaller, but is still very effective,

Not at all. I use 20 gauge exclusively. Deer, turkey, rabbit...you name it. I love it. You don't need a cannon to kill an animal. Tell that to all the 12 gauge guys. They hate that. Especially when they miss.

It all depends on what you are going to use it for. Your shotgun sizes are like this 28,410,20,16,12,and 10 gauges. I used a 20 gauge for squirrel, rabbit, quail deer, and waterfowl.
