There is no "best" art. Shaolin Temple Boxing (Kung Fu) & Karate are both fine martial arts. There are more differences among different Chinese styles than there are between Chinese & Japanese styles or between Chinese & Korean styles etc.
Find a good instructor & good luck.

Kung Fu is basically an encompasing martial arts. Every fighting technic invented is a form of Kung Fu. It's part of a religion and, in itself, is not ment for fighting. It's about turning violence into a harmless art.

Karate is all about fighting, but is fairly limited to punches, kicks and some weapons. There are not holds in Karate.

Kung Fu is a bit weaker, since it cannot be played in scrabble. karate, however, has a lower overall letter-point-score, so it too is a weak play.
Most dangerous is 'Karate Fu' - which is the ancient art of calling someone names in a high pitched squeal.
