If you are in a social situation, I would definitely go with the thumb, believe it or not. Hopefully the booger isn't wedged too high up there, because the fattest digit isn't the best for high-altitude digging. The advantage is that you kinda look like you might just be scratching your nose, plus it is kind of hidden behind the other fingers as you do it.
If it isn't a social context, then, hey, go for whatever finger works for that particular booger. The right tool for the job, etc. For pesky little ones, the pinky works fine. For larger work, use your index finger. Using your birdie (middle) finger, is just gross no matter what. The ring finger is preferred by left-wing quiche-eating liberal elitists, so if you want to add some Gallic flair to your picking, use that one.

The thumb - it shows mastery and proficiency. Only pros pick with the thumb. Not only does it get the job done but you get to show off your skills at the same time. Kill two birds with one stone - use the thumb.

I would say it is best to pick your boogers using your pink/black wond. Just jam it up there and mooch around for a nice sloppy one. Then eat it off your wond, magic

I'd say the pinkie because it would have the most wiggle room, and it would be able to fit into tight places. Definitely not the thumb.

Pinky, small enough to get in and maneuver (and if you have a bit of a nail, you can chip away at the hardened areas)
