I asked almost this exact question a few weeks ago and somebody answered by saying...

All states have inmate search option on their state dept. of corrections homepage

They were absolutely right. I was quite sure the inmate was in California - because that's where the crime was committed - so I went to the California State Department of Corrections website and there was a number to call. They said that I needed to know the inmates name and birthdate. It took a while for somebody to answer the phone - but once they did I gave them the info and they told me what prison he was in. Pretty simple - and I paid nothing.

I don't know where you have to pay to find an inmate. But you can call the local police department and ask where that inmate was transferred to. They should provide a phone number or a website of the where you can find the inmate.
