Is there an age limit to buy a lighter in California? I've heard that you have to be eighteen to buy a lighter in SOME shops only. If this is true, where is it permitted to sell one to a minor.

I once went into a liquor store and the cashier asked me for ID. That's why I'm so confused.

The reason you got carded was because you went into a Liquor Store, you must be 21 to enter the building. Go to a 7-11 or some other random gas station and I doubt they will say anything, or be smart about it since you need a lighter so badly go to a grocery store or a wal-mart or something along those lines and pick up a pack of lighters for like $6

Actually, it is illegal for a person under the age of 18 to purchase or possess cigarette lighters in California. Similarly, it is illegal for stores to sell cigarette lighters to people who are under 18. Possession and / or sales of tobacco, tobacco products, and "any other instrument or paraphernalia that is designed for the smoking or ingestion of tobacco" is unlawful if the suspect is under 18. This clause has been interpreted to include cigarette lighters. Refer to California Penal Code 308 for specific information.
