The Standard French "r" is a voiced uvular fricative. Raise the back of your tongue toward the top of your mouth like you are making a "g" (as in "good") in English. Move your tongue back a little bit further and do not close off the airstream completely (as you would normally do in making a "g"). Now make the sound. That is the French "r"--a voiced uvular fricative.

No, we don't put the tip of our tongue between out teeth when we pronounce "r". Don't worry: most people will understand you. It's just practice, practice, practice...
Ok, you know when you're trying to spit. You try to get everything from the back of your throat. Well, you do that,,except that you don't really make any sound (no spitting sound, please). The thing is, you're not supposed to accentuate this "movement". It's just a very fast movement... Not sure I'm really helping, here... Sorry.

If you seriously can't make the 'r', and it does take loads of practice, use a really breathy, loud 'H' sound. It sounds closer than the
American 'r' to the French sound.
Just keep listening to French, one day the sound will appear!

Try putting the tip of your tongue behind your teeth on the roof of your mouth. Hold it there, I have to brace the sides of my tongue against my top teeth, and blow. That's the best I can describe it. Good luck.
