That is really nothing to worry about. The Chinese have older diesel powered subs, which make more noise than a New years eve party. Believe me, it didnt just pop up unannounced near one of our task forces. There are always one or two of our 688I attack subs with the fleet, and if the Chinese sub would have gotten frisky, they would have found out just how good our Mk 48 ADCAP torpedoes are.
Every nation on earth knows we have the most powerful, technologicly advanced navy that ever put to sea. Politics have nothing at all to do with the destructive power of that task force, and there are provisions that state that every navy ship has the power and authority to protect itself from attack.
Taiwan has nothing to fear either, because most of their equipment and training come from us. They actually have a respectfully sized navy of their own, as well as air force, and if mainland China were to try something, we are obligated to render any and all assistance. If anything, I would say good luck to China.

It was a Song class sub this time. In 1984 Kitty Hawk collided with a Soviet nuclear-powered Victor class (Project 671) attack submarine in the Sea of Japan. It is not unusual for enemy subs to practice sneaking up on carriers. Maybe not too smart, especially in a tense time.

Hard to make any conclusions. My guess is that the US Navy is 'sandbagging' in order to make the Chinese think they are better than they really are.
