By shaking my leg, I mean while I am sitting down I am constantly moving it up and down, and sometimes without even noticing. It's become a habit (I guess) now. People have to hold it down for me because it's so annoying.

What type of person is this characeristic commonly associated with? And how can I stop it! Any suggestions?

By the way, I know it's not RLS. I don't get any tingly or prickly sensations, and I really only shake one leg.

Bet you physically jump when startled, too, don't you? I used to do it. Type A personality, very tense, jumpy, rattled easily, emotional? The only thing that worked was slowing down my metabolism, extra Vit. B compounds, and anti-depressants. Recently I started taking a new cholesterol med and the jumpy and shaking the leg is back. I will be asking for a change in meds but you could cut back on sugar, caffeine, nicotine, and find lots of activity to keep you moving, until you can start to get your sleep regularly. Continue to pay attention to what your body is telling you, try to slow down (take longer to eat, walk slower, dress slower), anything you can slow down enough and long enough for it to become a habit. Sorry, but the cure truly is a long hard road, and you'll probable get there when you get old anyway.

You probably developed the habit of shaking your leg when you were a child in order to comfort yourself or to keep yourself occupied when sitting still, or something alone those lines. It will be very difficult to quit. Just have everyone around you to tell you when you are doing it so that you become more aware when and where you do it. Then stop moving your leg. With a lot of practice you will stop sooner or later, however you also want to make sure that it is not related to a health condition. The only way to do that is to see a Doctor.

My friend has this same habit. And that's exactly what it is, a habit. Why most people do it is because it's a release of energy. Maybe you feel anxious, excited? To rid yourself of this burden just try to be more aware of it. Just like biting your nails, I'm sure that when you do it, you don't even realize that you are. Maybe try some form of exercise?

maybe you have RLS (restless leg syndrome) or other symptoms could show terrets. i have the same thing, i constantly shake my legs when i am sitting, but i don't have either of those. sometimes it is just a nervous habit. you might want to calm down! destress a little. bubble baths and massages work wonders.

maybe you just have a lot of energy and are fidgety

people that are like this burn a lot more calories throughout the day than people that tend to stay more still......

It is an actual medical problem you might want to go to your doctor. I saw a commercial for the treatment of this problem. Go see your doctor.
