Make the cake from a box mix and do the frosting by scratch. This is the best recipe for German Chocolate Cake frosting that I have ever found:

12 oz. evaporated milk
1 1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup butter
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 egg yolks, slightly beaten
2 1/3 cups coconut
1 1/2 cup chopped peacans

Stir milk, sugar, butter, egg yolks, and vanilla in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly for 12 minutes or until thickened and golden brown. Remove from heat. Stir in coconut and chopped peacans. Let it cool completely before spreading onto the cake.
