Well, it depends on what part of robotics you would like to get into.

Robots are essentially mechanical devices that are controlled by electrical components/processes. If you want to be on the side of robotics that deals with the links, joints, etc. then mechanical might be the way to go. Also, some industrial grade robots use hydraulic or pneumatic actuators to move (which I believe a ME major would know about). Finally, ME majors touch on linear systems and control theory (needed to create high-end robotics).

On the other hand, robots are usually controlled by microprocessors and software. Also, knowledge of linear systems and feedback control theory is very helpful when creating accurate or fast-moving robots. Finally, electric motors and power supplies are often used for certain robot designs. All these would be covered in an electrical or comptuter engineering major.

So, choose whichever you side you like. I happen to be an EE, so my experience in my studies might make this view a bit skewed towards the EE side of robotics, but it is accurate to the best of my knowledge.

Oh, and look for a school that has an engineering team/club that designs robots (something like FIRST). If you are really want to do robotics, that kind of experience would be invaluable.

You have to do kinematics of ME, basic Electronics, some hardware engineering, communication of EE and some programming in CS. EE is the right direction with some minors in ME.
