I think there's some truth to that quote, but those who assume atheists have no morality simply because they don't believe in supernatural beings haven't educated themselves.
I believe in fair play. Probably the best phrasing of this moral precept is the Golden Rule. Treat others with respect. Each person has the right to pursue happiness and fulfillment in his own way, so long as it does not harm others or prevent them from pursuing the same in their own way.

The phrase is quite catchy, but it's too pat to be an absolute. I do agree that everybody has to believe in something, whether they want to call it God, love, the universe or whatever. I was raised going to church on Sundays, later decided I was an agnostic, then even later an atheist. Now I do know God is, how or why is irrelevant to this. I think the most basic moral code in the world is The Golden Rule--Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. There are variations of this rule in every viable society I know of. Basically I take that to mean, if I think I have the right to do something to, for, or with anybody else then they, or somebody else has the right to do that to, for, or with me. So that makes you pretty careful about "invading somebody's space". And I get as defensive as necessary when somebody invades mine.

I'm not an atheist although I know plenty of people who are.
Most of them are very decent, moral people. They feel they don't need a set of "religious rules" to live by - they beleive in the things most of us do -
work hard,
take care of your nearest and dearest,
show compassion to those less fortunate than yourselves,
stealing and committing crime is wrong,
its wrong to cheat on your partner
They might not get all upset about things like sex outside marraige, or people being gay for example, because most of them don't see anything wrong with these things - they aren't following what the Bible says. They are using their own minds.
I'm more of an agnostic I guess - although I don't disbeleive in God I share the same sort of beleifs as above. I can't get upset about people being gay or having sex when they are not married - I have know many decent loving people in these kinds of relationships.
(and plenty of married people who did nothing but sleep around!)
I can't really become a 100% card carrying Christian I guess because I am not against these things, neither am I against abortion (If you were talking about a 13 year old rape victim who was pregnant I'd be behind her decision to have an abortion 100% for example!)
But that doesn't mean that an agnostic like me (or any of the real Atheists I know) are horrible immoral monsters! Most of them are very decent people, they have been put off organised religion by bigots and morons who spout intolerant crap and ram their views down others' throats and behave in a very un-religious way (bombing people and attacking gay funerals for example - not very caring or compassionate). These people are the biggest threats to religion today.
The other thing that makes me laugh is the way some Christians are so judgemental when Jesus Himself taught them:
"Judge not that ye be Judged!"

I agree with it, just not the idea some people have that it MUST be theism! Atheists can be and are extraordinarily moral, compassionate, generous people, who stand up for individuals and causes, to better the world. That's what I believe in, especially the rights of children and in fighting to protect our Constitutional freedoms, INCLUDING FREEDOM OF RELIGION, even the ones who hate atheists!

Why do you keep asking these kinds of questions? You already know the answer because even the most brainless person in the world will know the answer.
Just because someone doesn't believe in god doesn't immediately mean they have no morals.
You have to live in this world with the rest of us don't you? Isn't it a much nicer world when everyone isn't trying to kill each other every second of every day?
You don't have to base morals on any god. You base morals on the society you live in.
Wicca put it well... "Harm None".
Meaning, its so much nicer when everyone isn't trying to kill each other, rape each other, steal from each other, etc.
Isn't it?
So why do you need a god to teach you that? Don't you have enough brains to realize that all on your own?

I'm puzzled. By your questions you seem to be implying that religion is the basis of morality. It's not. Morality comes with education, experience, maturity, intelligence and common sense. I'm not an atheist but I know several atheists who are much more moral and honest imo than many Christians I know. There is a great deal of immorality connected to organized religions, especially the fundamentalist Christian and Muslim sort who want to dominate the lives of others according to their belief system.

I agree, which is why I have taken a stand against the corrupt system of organized religion by boycotting it and debating with religious people until they are befuddled and confused. I stand for righteousness, for good, for truth, and for justice against those who have oppressed and suppressed me and others like me, as well as those who aim to discredit science and truth.
I do not aim to hurt, maim, kill, blame, or otherwise profit from another's stupidity, and my morals are otherwise very similar to other people's as we taught them by society. I believe that I have been raised to know what is just, and to then defend it. I have a conscience, just like everyone else, and I base my actions on such beliefs created by my human conscience.
I would agree with that phrase, and it is such a great message, showing that unless you stand for something, you may as well fall into the deep and dark hole of blind faith.

Most of us "stand for" something. We either look to the community, or family, or government, or something as larger than ourselves. Our morals are derived from common sense, history, etc...
You know there have been plenty of "atheist" countries in the world and yet their people didn't necessarily run around murdering and raping anymore than any christian country. In fact the United States, where 80% of the people believe in god, has one fo the highest crime and murder rates in the world. Isn't that something?

Just because someone doesn't "stand for" some sort of deity doesn't mean he has no morals. And it certainly doesn't mean he is gullible. Atheists are usually quite the opposite.
Maybe you should branch out and meet some of the atheists around you. There are lots and lots. You'll find they usually are good people.

I truthfully have mentioned issues loudly previously on somewhat some ocassions and by ability of accident, i haven't gotten the crap overwhelmed out of me yet. yet I only hate listening to people make threats to infants that are actually not waiting to guard themselves. I truthfully have witnessed this kind of habit greater situations than i will think of of. some mothers and dads only would desire to pass away the youngsters with a neighbor in the event that they might not cope with taking them to the keep, or in a worse case situation, mothers and dads ought to take a relax pill whilst taking infants figuring out to purchase with them. Spanking is specially circumstances mandatory to make an older toddler behave. yet threating and bodily abusing a toddler, NO! ? ?
