If not, how would you stop it?

Thank you for the answers. I am the landlord who had this happen to me. I suggested that I would build a doghouse. Or that a crate should be utilized. But the owner said the dog would not do those choices. So the owner had the dog put to death. Now the owner blames me for murdering the dog. Does this make sense?

Also, the renter is my mother. She has now said she never wants her grandkids to set foot in her house ever again, never! What would you do in this situation?

Of course not. My sister is the worst culprit! She has two dogs and I swear that house smells like Pee the second you walk in! Gross Central. She Say's she cleans it up immediately but I tell her it stinks and the floors are absorbing it ( ruining the Hardwood floors I might add ) and she is going to be in deep Shi_ when the owner comes to do a walk through. Worse when the owner evicts her and sends her a bill for the floors. ( huge$) The thing is the owner has not come in 3 years as he has a management company deal with it so she is lucky. I told her its is irresponsible for her to allow this and that she needs to keep the dogs outside when she is not home and when she goes to bed. Period . I asked her how she would like it if that was her home and she was renting it out and came back one day and saw how it was abused? She just gave me that stupid alcoholic shrug. These dogs are too old to learn to new tricks and be potty trained. If the dogs are younger you have a good chance at training them but you have to be stern or forget about it.

Dear Why?
How do you think you would feel if you rented a house or apartment to someone who let their pet uninate where ever it wanted? Is there some reason you can't take the dog out for regular walks to relieve itself? Is your dog ill or very old? Is there anyone you can ask to take the dog for walks if you are unable to do it? Perhaps if there are no medical or physical reasons the dog is doing this you should read up on housebreaking techniques for dogs. Whats going on now is really unacceptable behavior for any healthy dog.
Be prepared to pay to have the mess professionally cleaned in the event you decide to move. What you are doing is inconsiderate to your landlord and to any future tenants. LL

Ah how sad that this has come between you and your mom. She should take responsibility for not having the dog trained and for having the dog put down. She should have tried to get it a new home or find a shelter that would. HOWEVER, this is between the two of you and the children shouldn't be involved. Since you have evidently taken over the parent role you should tell her that the children need her and just because shes mad at you she doesn't need to have the children effected by it.
Perhaps you can soften the blow by getting her a nice kitten with a litter box. Good luck dear my mom lives with me!

Somebody got a little out of control in this situation. No animal should ruin a house. There are several things that could have been done. She could have had a cage for the dog. Have the dog outside more. I hope she had it checked by a vet? Maybe time will heal this. I hope so. Don't llet her make you feel guilty.

My answer to that is no. I don't think you should let the dog continue to pee in the house, especially if you are renting, because the landlord can sue you for damages. My advice to you to get the dog to stop is to put down newspapers and everytime you see the dog about to pee pick it up(if you can) and move it towards the designated peeing area (where the newspapers are and let it finish). Also every time you see it peeing in the house gently take your finger or you hand and smack in on its nose like you would a baby and tell it "no" then put him/her outside for a time out. Eventually if you keep this up and take it for walks outside it should stop...and don't forget when walking the dog outside to carry treats in your pocket and for everytime the dog goes outside and pees, give it a treat and tell them that they did a good job. After this the dog should realize its mistake and stop.

Housebreaking a dog can be a pain but it can be done if you take the time to do it. I think that's what you should do rather than dealing with the hassle of cleaning up all the time. If you look up "housebreaking" on the Internet you will find hundreds of sites telling you how to do it. And NEVER EVER rub your dogs nose in the offending spot. If you find a site that says that, go someplace else.
Here's a good spot to start:

If the dog is so "beloved" why aren't you walking it????? Take your dog to the dog park at a regular time every day, it will wait to "go", because they love the dog park and pe__ng all over outside! Frequent walks, like every hour, until you figure out the schedule of your "beloved" dog. How can you ask such a ridiculous question? Would you like living in a pi_s filled room, oh wait...you do!

It depends, do you have the money to replace the damaged areas? Because you will be charged. Can you put up with the smell? You have to live there. Health hazards? Something for you to research

Try house training your dog....or place your dog in a home that will properly take care of it.

Are you nuts? Really, why would you even think about not housebreaking a dog because you live in a rented house??

What if you move out to your own home? The home you are in now is going to begin to smell like urine in a short time. Do you want to live with that? It is not fair to your dog either.

If you don't want to spend the time housebreaking your dog, then find him/her a good home. It is people like like you that ruin it for other people with dogs that want to rent a house.

People trust you and rent their home to you and this is how you repay them?
You are one hell of a good person......................

why would anyone want their dog to potty in the house? depending on how old the dog is retrain it... take it outside as soon as it wakes in the morning after meals and after naps... just like you do a kid.

if this was your mother that had her dog put down... then there are much deeper psych.. problems going on with her... don't blame yourself.. she just wants to play the" poor pity me card" to get attention. why would anyone put down a dog if nothing were wrong with it? and if she doesn't want her grandchildren to visit because of all this... she really needs a shrink........
