Well, I know you're talking about Victoria, Australia - because I live here and know the Great Ocean Road ;-)
Hmm, looked a little like a kiwi? Here's some possibilities:
Heron - http://www.milamba.com/australia/inhabit/birds/bird23.htm
Ibis - http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/finder/display.cfm?id=85
Curlew - http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/finder/display.cfm?id=237
Stork - http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/finder/display.cfm?id=202
Godwit - http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/finder/display.cfm?id=89
Egret - http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/finder/display.cfm?id=219
Cormorant - http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/finder/display.cfm?id=81
But these are mostly wading birds. It wasn't a lyrebird, was it?

Or have a browse through these great lists -

Best of luck!

C'mon people, I know it's the metric system and everything, but Great Blue and Grey Herons are not 10 cm tall.
Sorry, not Australian, but just offhand sounds like a shorebird (i.e. a sandpiper, Scolopacidae). My wild guess is Far Eastern Curlew:

Victoria where? There are many Victorias in this world. Here is a site for you if it is British Columbia:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rick_leche/sets/87809/
If you see a photo that looks like what you saw, hold your cursor over it without clicking and it will tell you what it is. You can also click on the photo to enlarge it.
If it is Australia go to this site:
http://ozwildlife.awardspace.com/wildlifethumbs.php?class=Bird&index=0
There are multiple pages. Just click on next at the bottom of each page. You can click on a photo to see an enlargement and other views.

sounds alot like a grey herron, or a blue herron, (blue still tend to look like there greyish) also did it look wiled or...like a lost pet, because, though i doubt, it sounds a "lil'" like a grey macow, but i can't tell unless you have pic, srry, even though it mite be a shaded cockatoo, or a rose breasted cockattom but they have rounded beaks. HOPE i helped. :)
