If you want a digital camera that is not worth much money, buy a new one and then try to sell it.
But seriously, there is a lot of technology in there. In considering the price, remember that once you get over the hump of the initial investment, you will also realize that you're done spending money. No more film, chemicals or processing fees. You are able to take all the pictures you want FOR FREE and this is the right way to learn photography.

well...it is about marketing and the simple fact the end-users accept the price ...
the point-and-shot class digital camera ...are cheap !!!
now comes the trick... look at this:
standard kit (body+standard lens)
Canon Digital SLR class = 1200 USD
same Canon SLR (35mm) = 400 USD
so....you have 800 USD to spend on 35mm roll films, slides, high quality paper, ...allways everything at a high quality or if you want highest resolution possible (think about printing on 8x12" paper only NOT 4x6"). And DSLR are much much simple than any 35mm SLR (think only about all the moving parts which are need it in order to advance the film at a rate of 3 frames per second)
what you pay for (the 800) is the advantage of being able to see/check the photo right there ...so you can do the shot again.
and for digital you have to spend 1000 USD for a good computer and another 500 USD on a real high quality photo printer (with 8 ink cartridges).
nice market ... ;-)
anyway ...my choice ...digital photography.

Because it is a relatively new "toy" and they know people will pay it. Think about it, when VCR's came out, they were several hundred dollars. The same thing with DVD players. Now they are cheap, I saw a DVD player for sale at the store the other day for $29.99, and I guarantee that it was more advanced than the ones that first came out at several hundred dollars each. It has nothing to do with the technology, just the novelty.
Give it time, it will become less of a novelty, and therefore less expensive.

cause there really good cameras. The pictures come out nice and clear, and you can take lots of pictures with out the constant worries of getting new film.
It really depends on what type of digital camera you get. Some can be pretty inexpensive. However, the cheaper ones are usually the crappiest brands.

I don't know, but it pisses me off. Yes, you can get a cheap camera, but it won't be able to do a whole lot. Big bucks for the good stuff.
