Like the previous person said, it takes a loss of 3500 calories to lose one pound. At the rate of 240 calorie loss per day, it would take approximately 14.5 days to lose one pound. However, the amount of calories a person burns is not equal for all individuals. If depends on your age and how much you weigh as well as how much muscle your body already has on it, as muscle burns more calories then fat because it takes more calories to "feed" the muscle. It also depends on how many calories you put into your body a day. Empty calories are huge factors in weight loss. For example, drinking pop, eating junk food, etc...add unnecessary calories. I once cut out all the bad calories out of my diet and in one month I lost 23 pounds!! All because I quit eating the bad food. Drinking one can of coke a day (which has 180 calories) can equal out the calories that you lost while walking. Think about this if you really want to lose weight.
"Bigger" people tend to lose weight and burn more calories then "lighter" people. So, depending on your weight and age, you may be burning less or more then the 240 calories that your friend is. However, not considering all these options, average weight loss for losing 240 calories a day, is approx. 25 pounds a year.
Sources for all this information are various, the most prominent being ivillage.com
Hope this helps! :o)

Lady's meter probably computed her body weight. Your caloric burn will depend on your own weight. The heavier, the more calories burnt.
Two hundred forty calories every day will add up to 3,500 calories which is about one pound of body fat, in two weeks. That is losing about 25 Lbs of pure fat every 12 months.
Humans normally burn fat from bodily deposits on a non-stop-24-hour-a-day basis. Moderate walking accelerates for a while this fat-burning process.
You can also accumulate fat a little slower by cutting moderately the amounts of daily food you eat. Not dieting, just slightly reducing the portions you eat.
It may be as easy as leaving something uneaten in your plate.
You're doing exactly what is needed for permanent body fat loss. Don't quit.
Good Luck!

Well, I don't have a calculator handy, but I know each 3500 calories you burn equals one pound of fat lost. I can't give you much more specific information without knowing your circumstances. If you were eating just enough food and exercising just enough to maintain your weight and neither gain nor lose weight, then each time you move in addition to the base level of exercise that you were doing will cause you to slowly lose weight. If, on the other hand, you were slowly gaining weight over the years, then you may have to engage in additional exercise and potentially cutting down of portions and unhealthy foods in your diet in order to lose weight.
Assuming that you were at a perfect equilibrium of caloric intake and caloric usage, you would lose one pound every (insert 3500/240 here) days, meaning (insert 365/[previously calculated value]) pounds per year.

I can tell you one thing, it takes 3500 calories to lose a pound. But, keep in mind, that your body is constantly burning calories. When you eat, you're burning calories, even when you sleep. When you walk, it amps your metabolism so that you lose more throughout out the day. 2 miles is a good length to go a day, it will help a lot.

You have to balance the calories your burn against the calories you take in. If there is a net daily loss, you will shed pounds. It will probably be trial-and-error. If your goal is 2 pounds/week (which should be your maximum), adjust your daily intake until you reach that level. If you are walking a BRISK two miles/day, you may not even have to change your eating habits to see a weight loss! You go, girl!

To burn fat from your body, you need to burn more calories that you take in. In a 24 hour period, if you eat 2500 calories, and only burn a total of 2000 calories in that same day for execrcise and normal activity, you have added 1/7th of a pound of fat to your body. (3600/500)
