I am not saying the bible isnt true, by all means, but I have a suggestion why people doubt it.
Long time ago, people didnt have any sort of reliable writing, and most stories where told orally, passed from generation to generation. that's also why we know of say, mythology today. You know, Zeus and all that stuff. It's really old too, but I doubt there is ANYONE who believes in it, and it just preserved.
I imagine the people who doubt the Bible have that reasoning, it was a bunch of stories passed on, until a point someone started taking them completely serius, and so on.
Like say, Santa Claus, Santa Claus was recently created, and if we tell it to our kids, they will believe it, until someone assures them that is not the way. Also has to do with Culture.
Let me give you an example of how that would work. This is a true story, and silly too: My grandmother, before she had children, was told nothing about sex, and instead was told that babies came from mother goose, or something liek that. when she reached 25 years of age and got married, had sex and got pregnant, when she first felt the child kicking gently inside her, she thought she was possesed by a demon. Which we all know is not the case. She was not aware of pregnancy and believed the mother goose story because noone told her otherwise. Everyone in her time was raised the same way, so because of that culture, none of her friends could tel her her parents told her the wrong thing. Only difference is, the demon inside of her could be proven to not be a demon, and that it is pregnancy. But with God, you cant Prove he doesn't exist or that he does with complete logic.
Another example. Say I where to take a bunch of babies to another planet, and as they grew, I would tell them I was God, and they had to worship me, and one day I would go away, and that they should tell their offspring that I was God and keep it going, if that scenario were possible, they would believe it, although as we all know, I am not God.
By no means am I comparing God to that, I am just trying to think of the view people whom dont believe in the bible, take.
Thats just my take on it. Might be wrong, of course.

By your logic, we should all be following the Egyptian religion, as there are preserved complete copies of it that are over 4000 years old. Specifically, the Egyptian Book of the Dead Codex has been found multiple times, complete copies, that have been preserved and USED to this very day.
The Bible is not the oldest preserved book, nor does it contain the oldest religion.

The Egyptian Book of the Dead is older... and it is just as preserved, in many different languages.
And strange, the Bible itself states that if you add or take away anything in there, you are doomed...... if it couldn't be changed, then there would be no need for such warnings. (And it's being proven to be added to... last verses of Mark are added... Revelation was not considered canon till much later, etc....) Please, study the History of the book... and ask a Jew if your Old Test is any different than their Torah. I think you will be surprised at the answer to that one.

Greek Mythologies have passed on longer.... even more importantly and relevant is that there are texts from the Old Testement as well as oral records and written records of African religions and South American religions. Since those have lasted longer, by your argument, does that make them any more real than the bible? No. So time does not equate fact.

That's not true. There are hundreds of stories throughout history that are not true and are still being taught today. If you want to defend the bible, you need to come up with a better explanation than that. For the record i am a christian and do believe in the bible but your defense of the bible is flawed.

So you're basically saying that the Bible must be true because it's been around so long. Well then - what about other religious texts that've been around much longer? Guess they're even more true, given your criteriae. Heh - thinking there's no other book like the Bible shows your profound ignorance and immaturity. Naw, I ain't gonna name them for you - get off your lazy posterior and look 'em up yourself!

Oedipus Rex is much older, and translated into just as many languages. Does that mean that is is a greater, or more influential piece of literature? Does it mean we have to agree with everything presented in it simply because it was written a long time ago?

There’s lots of bibles and the version your probably talking is actually newer then a lot of others.
If you do some research you’ll find that the bible is made of bunch of scriptures and men decided which ones to include and which ones to leave out. Some of the ones left out are really interesting too.

There are many such books still in existence today some older than the bible. Being old doesn't prove a thing especially when it's
not the oldest.

people doubt because there is no structure. how can something that's supposed to be the absolute truth have so many directions that it goes in. no one can agree with anything but that it gives them hope. people that find empowerment and hope from within don't need religion. and have you ever thought about the fact that it's less than 2,006 years old? that's not that long it can still die out. as long as people keep adding their own 2 cents to it and creating new religions out of it, it will always circulate. and how long ago was it that king james wrote his version. way to much indecisiveness for me.
