Cat's whiskers are used to help them feel if things are too small to get into and out of (though, obviously, they don't always pay attention to what the whiskers say! *LOL*)

There are no nerves or blood in whiskers...the nerves are in the skin at the base of the whiskers. They are just very stiff hairs. They fall out and grow back naturally many times over during the life of a cat.

Cutting whiskers makes a cat look funny (and may help them get stuck more often in small places) but does not hurt them at all...well...other then the mental anguish they will have to go through will down at the local kitty-bar when their friends laugh at them and make fun of their whisker-less faces. Not to mention the emotional abuse inflicted when kitties of the opposite sex refuse to dance or mate with them because of the absence of the sexy kitty whiskers.

If I was you, I would sneak up on my sister while she sleeps and cut off all her hair and see how she likes that.

Oh, wait, was that last part out loud? *blush* sorry...nevermind.

Cat Whiskers Cut

No, you should not cut them off. I'm not sure, but they may not grow back. A cat's whiskers are for the cat to determine if it can fit through or into a small place. It's whiskers are the same size as the largest part of it's body, normally the hips. If it's whiskers can't fit, it can't fit, and it will know that and not get stuck.

Cats Whisker

Never, never cut a cat's whiskers. The rule function for the whiskers is this ... the length of the whiskers is as long as the widest width of the cat. They are able to feel their way around with their whiskers as far as where they can and can not fit into. Ask a vet, they will tell you the same thing. NEVER cut their whiskers. Would you like it if someone cut off your ears because they were bugging you????

I think whiskers help them keep their balance and also allows them to judge whether they can fit in/through somewhere (if the whiskers don't fit, the body isn't going to fit).

I haven't heard about it actually hurting them to grow back, but if it was cut it shouldn't...if it was plucked or shaved, however, that's a different story...At any rate, it's not very nice to cut the cat's whiskers.

A cat has about twenty-four movable whiskers, twelve on each side of its nose (some cat's may have more). Whiskers are more than twice as thick as ordinary hairs, and their roots are set three times deeper than hairs in a cat's tissue. Richly supplied with nerve endings, whiskers give cats extraordinarily detailed information about air movements, air pressure and anything they touch.
Whiskers are extremely sensitive as they are closely connected to the nervous system. Any damage to his whiskers will cause your cat discomfort, and he may become confused or disoriented. DON'T ever trim his whiskers, and DON'T ever wash them, he will keep them clean himself.

I have heard the same as the rest of the answers. Basically that Cats use them to sense sizes and distances around them. (Usually the whiskers from tip to tip are just slightly wider than than the width of your cat). For the record, though, I did cut my cat's whiskers when I was younger - actually just one side - to test out this theory. He didn't seem terribly affected in any way and they did grow back.

whiskers are used for seeing in the dark. if you look carefully, a cat's whiskers are the same length and wight as their head. they use this to see if they can fit in a small area, without sticking their whole head in and getting stuck, they just see if their whiskers fit.
i wouldn't advise cutting them off. i don't know if it hurts them, but there are probably nerves in there, so it might.
