Dogs communicate a lot by sense of smell. That's why they smell every tree, fire hydrant, and mailbox when they are out for a walk. It's the doggy equivalent of a newspaper. They know who came by, and about how long ago.
They are also pack animals, and they tend to check to see what the alpha dog in the pack is up to. If you're doing it right, your dog thinks you're the alpha male or alpha female in his pack.
So your dog is probably checking to see if there's any new developments in your life.
Or maybe just to see if you dropped anything edible while you were sitting there.
