Have you thought about stripping them & restaining them a lighter color? This might be a better idea if you have a decent looking wood. I prefer stains over paint. You can also get stains in different colors now too!

Anything in the kitchen will have a lot of grease on it. Clean the cabinets good and then lightly sand them. Buy a good grade of primer and coat them until the darkness is gone, then you can paint them any color you like. In some cases you need to take the old paint off. You can do this with a heat gun or chemicals and then sanding. A heat gun will save you money of expensive paint removers. You may have to use some. Every job is kind of different.

If you strip them down to natural wood, you can apply a sealer, then use a "pickling" stain or just diluted white paint. It was a very popular finish about 15-20 years ago, and I'm seeing it advertised again.

Here's what I'm talking about:

Good luck!

what ever you decide, you probably should take the cabinet doors off,so you can work on them horizontally, will be easier.. make sure you number them so you remember which one goes where, then strip/paint/stain..just a thought..

are they paint or stain? I say sand them and either stain with a lighter stain, or paint a lighter color.
