Obviously I want to work. I leave for the states in January on my K1 fiancee visa, we are getting married on 10th Feb. Im a british citizen she is an american citizen. Once we are wed, does anyone know how long it takes to get my status updated, get the infamous green card and the social security number. I need these quick, so I can get working, get my Driving licence etc etc. Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully there are some Brits out there who have been thru the process. Thanks in advance. Hope this makes sense?????

Once married file for the I-485 to adjust your status. The I-485 includes the application for pettition, work permit etc.. Once you have filed that it will take approximately 3 months to get your work permit and social security card depending on which state you live. The more populated states with high immigrant populations takes longer. States like New york, Texas, Georgia, California, Arizona, you get the point. Happy marriage

Once you are married you need to file for Adjustment of Status (Form I-485) for the greencard, which can take up to a year to process. You also need to apply for Employment Authorization Document at the same time as your AOS (both applications can be sent in one package), so that you can legally work while you are waiting for the AOS to be processed. The EAD usually takes about 90 days to process, so for about 90 days you will not be able to work.

You can apply for your SSN as soon as you arrive in the US if you wish, as K-1 visa holders are entitled to an SSN. You may be able to get a drivers license if you have the SSN, but each state varies in its requirements, and some states require a valid visa. The K-1 is a valid visa, but it is only valid for 90days so a lot of states won't issue a license to a K-1 holder for that reason. You can however, use the EAD once you have it to get a drivers license as they are valid for 1year and accepted my most DMV's as proof of immigration status.

You should be able to get a work permit and social security number within a couple weeks of your marriage. It might take a while for the Green Card to come in the mail.
