I have been pre approved by Canadian Lenders Association for a loan, I believe they are a scam outfit as they want a retainer, so the rep is emailing me, and what should I be asking him for as proof of a legit company?

Check to see if Canada has a better business bureau and check the company out.

I ask soooo many questions I generally **** the scammers off and they just leave me alone. A legit business answers all my questions and gives me phne numbers so I can check up on them. I tell them rightout " I will be checking up on you, and until then we will not be doing business" again, scammers hang up on me!

Ask for their business ID. number(any country should have some sort of business tax number), and customer service phone number. Tell them you will get back to them after you have checked them out, and throw in there that if they do not come up clean then your lawyer will be in touch.

Works for me everytime !!

You get pre approved loan applications all the time.
so how can you be pre approved? Your not!
Your name was taken off a list they bought from some other company.
I would check with the Better Business Bureau or go the equivalent of and look to see what this company is about. But if you want a loan go to a legitimate financial institution and use those pre approved loan applications for starting the logs in the fireplace :-)

Ask them:

How they got your name and contact info
Why do they want the retainer and is there anyway to get rid of it before the loan happens most likely will back off or demand it stays

Ask them for a Business ID number

try a contact name and phone number can be found on their website http://www.canadianlendersassociation.com/

In the US, there are many laws regarding upfront fees for lenders, and the Federal Trade Commission's website www.ftc.gov is full of tips about these types of scams.

Some of the laws may not directly correlate, but here's one link where the US FTC actually sanctioned a Canadian company: http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1998/01/afldef2.htm

Here's a search list of many others. Many in Canada. Good luck

In the US, you could check with the Better Business Bureau. You could also ask for their business license number and where the company is based out of. You could then contact the city and inquire about the company. In the US you could also ask for their tax id number...all businesses are required to have one...and inquire with the IRS.

I have been solicited with thousands of those and wont answer one of them....But, if you do, then tell them they can take their retainer out of the loan, and then send you the rest...Bet they back off.....good luck....
