The primary role, responsibility and purpose of the army is clearly stated in the US Constitution.

To defend and protect the nation.

Simple answer, yes but accurate.

To secure and protect the borders, interests and people of the United States. However, this is my definition; there is very little about the military spelled out directly in the US Constitution (http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.table.html#articleii).
