If this mother and baby are street cats, they are probably feral. If the baby is leaving the nest with the mother, it is old enough to be adopted. Until the kittens are ready to be weaned, a feral mother will nurse the kittens in the nest and bring food to them. She only takes them out of the nest when she is beginning to teach them to hunt for food. The sooner you get this baby, the better the chances for taming her. If the kitten is leaving the nest, then it might be too late to tame it. Still, it is worth a try. Yes, with that color description, it is more than likely a girl.

I care for a colony of ferals in our neighborhood. Usually, only one or two of the females will breed in a colony, depending upon the local food supply. I watch them come to feed so that I can spot the pregnant females, and then note when they have delivered. With a bit of detective work, I manage to find the nest, and, when the kittens are about a month old, I raid the nest and hand raise them the rest of the way. At that age, they can eat on their own, and a supplement of KMR takes care of the nutrition. The earlier you get a feral kitten, the better your chances for domesticating them. There is a website called Alley Cat Allies and it is a dot org. web addie. You can get a lot of information there about trapping and taming.

It depends on how old the cat is, I'd say about 3 months old, others would say younger. The more time it spends with its mother the better the cat will turn out to be, know how to be a cat, etc. Feed the cat. If you have an empty or half empty can of tuna, give the cat a piece, and you'll be its best friend. The simplest way to tell the gender of the cat is behind its tail...if you see what looks like balls (in the most obvious and non-preverted use of the word) behind its tail, then it's a boy. If not, it's a girl. Call a vet's office to check and get some advice on how to handle it, or the SPCA in your area. Good luck! If you need help on naming the cat, let me know I've got a lot of good ideas!

Remember that if it's wild then you'll have to litter-train the cat if you want it to be an indoor cat. Always an obstacle to overcome, or you can have it be an outdoor cat that you let in and out of your house. It helps with not having a litterbox in the house (ew cat pee smell), but fleas may become a problem, as well as being fixed, there may be catfights with other neighborhood cats, and diseases also associated with being an outside cat.

Tri-colored cats are 99 and 44/100 sure to be female. That's the black, orange and white on the body or a tortoiseshell might just have the black and orange in a mottled pattern like the Merle in dog breeds.

Never take a cat from its mother. If it is still hanging around with her you should wait a while. If the kitten seems to be on its own then get it as soon as you can.

Just remember that she will be a cat and I have found very few to be "perfect".

If it is brown, white, and black is called a calico, which all of those are females, so yes to that question. And if the cat needs a home and does not have a owner well you could try. It she trys to escape let her go, she might have a family. (this is if you bring her into your home) If she is fine in your house, take her to the vet to see if she doesn't have any illness. Well also if you love cats alot and feel bad for taking her away from her mother or if she has a family go to www.petfinder.com or go to your local animal shelter and find a calico.

I found a kitten a year ago that was raised in a ware house but I caught it by the scruff of the neck cause it was freezing out and I had a soft spot for it. Holly made a great pet and became very affectionate and close to us as she grew up. If the kitten is extremely wild you may have difficulties raising it and it may become frightened in it's environment and hide. It's your call but consider how it lives now and it's temperment to consider owning it.

leave food out to attract them. but feral and semi-feral cats may never trust people. you can also use a pheromone lure with a live trap if necessary.
