You have always been supposed to check in 30 minutes before departure. And if you're not at the gate 15 minutes before departure, you seat can be given away. Boarding starts 30 minutes before departure.

Departure is when the plane is actually leaving, not when you're supposed to be there. Once the boarding door is closed, you're not getting on the plane whether it's still sitting out there or not.

Most airlies do close check-in 30 minutes prior, especially if you are checking bags. If you are in a larger airport you will need at least that much time to get through security and board with everyone else. If you are in a smaller airport it is common that the same people checking you in will also board the plane, so they have to close the counter so they can go to the gate. Anything less than 30 min is not "within reason"

I work for an airline and can tell you that the larger airports now close check in 45 minutes prior to departure while some of the smaller airports will allow check in up to 30 minutes prior.

some airlines you can 'check in' over the internet within 24 hours of departure time -

but you must check in or your seat is toast
even if you have a ticket - you may have to take the next flight (cause they gotta get your luggage on)

each airline is different - so you can see their own rules on their site -

You need to check in 2 hours in advance for a national flight and 3 hours for an international flight.

After checking in, you will go through security and have your shoes and all your possessions taken away .You will get everything back after they have been scanned.
Then you proceed to your gate and wait.

These days things change from day to day! I would contact either your travel agent or the airline and ask them your question.
