A few firefighters in my communty has asked me to think about joining the board. The people that are already on the board are elders. They firefighters have been in need of getting new gloves, air packs, more air masks, etc. The elders are refusing to get the new equipment. Our firefighters are in danger because of the out dated equipment. What would you do if you was in my shoes?

That's a really personal decision, one that people online cannot make for you. Do you WANT to do it? Can you contribute anything to help them? What are your goals, and are they realistic? Why did they ask you in particular to be on the board? Do you have some community pull or something? It all depends on what YOU want to do, not what anyone out here thinks you should do.
Also, if you are going to be making public speeches and pleas, you might want to have someone knowledgeable in English grammar look it over for you to avoid mistakes.
