The bean was a staple on almost every drive, trail, or wagon train into, out of, or through TX. There was useally one large pot to cook in, and a hand had room to carry one cup, and one plate, not a dish for the chili, and one for the beans.

Don't know where that came from and I'm sure there is Texas chili with beans. However, when I was stationed in San Antonio while in the Air Force I encountered two chil places that gave me dirty looks when I ordered chili and asked, when it arrived, why it didn't have beans. Maybe experiences like that are where the rumors started.

Texas chili does not have beans.

Just because every wagon train or cattle drive in, out, or through Texas had beans.......doesn't mean it was chili. It was beans, plain & simple.

Texas chili doesn't have beans in it. That was made clear by Gabby Hayes over 50 years ago.

I do not know who started it, but my fiance born and raised in Houston was surprised when I told him that chili was supposed to have beans in it. (I am from Montana where we eat beans in the winter for the protien to help keep us warm) So obviously the lie started years ago as he is 56 now.

That's the rules for a Texas chili competition...no beans, no filler.

Just pepper, meat, and tomato.

I saw it last night on "Throwdown with Bobby Flay" when he took on the world's chili champion.

That's the trouble — Texas chili does have beans. However, New Mexican green chile is far superior and makes the Texas stuff more suited for greasing axels on a wagon.
