yes, you need a visa and you have to get it in advance, a month before you book you ticket. since china is a communist government and the U.S, of course, a democratic country. you have to sign a visa for you own protection. being an american citizen doesnt mean you can travel to anywhere with out signing a visa. but there are a lot of countries you can though such as our brother country england or military controlled islands such as japan.
i hope getting a visa is not a burden and have fun.

Yes, to enter mainland China you have to have a visa. To enter Hong Kong, Shanghai and Macau, a visa is not required because they are SAR zones, special economic zones. If you enter one of these "ports" and then try to enter mainland China you will require a visa, which can be obtained at the border. Usually not a problem. If you want to be sure. You can obtain a single entry visa at a local Chinese Consul or Embassy. If you are in Hong Kong many of the tour agencies can get you a visa within a day or less.

To enter China, you definitely need a L tourist visa that you can obtain from your local Chinese consulate. You need to send your application, valid passport, 2 passport-size photos, and the fee which varies depending on the duration of the visa and the number of entries (it's slightly more expensive for US citizens than for others!). Check the link below for more information.
