In other words, if I believe one thing along with a great multitude of people should I be looked upon as being just a reflection as all the others?

Are we all not unique individuals with individual actions apart from everyone else?

Stereotyping is never a good idea. As a Catholic, I have to live with endless jokes about pedophilia, for instance, despite the fact that I've never heard of any such thing happening in my own parish or diocese. I survived years of Catholic school and served as an altar boy without incident. Yet I'm stuck with these stupid jokes and stereotypes. And as an Italian-American, I'm stereotyped a second time. Anyway, all this is to say that just because some priests did these terrible things definitely doesn't mean that I did them, or approve of them. So, as we already knew from the beginning, stereotyping is a bad idea, as well as a sign of intellectual laziness.

No you aren't JUST a reflection, that's part of it but not all of it. You may have different beliefs from those in your "group". These beliefs may affect how you live your life and that will be differently from many others. My home church believes in having as many kids as the moms uterus will allow. My husband believes otherwise and we stopped at 4. My church does tell me to submit to my husband so they can't fuss at us for our decision, esp since there teaching isn't exactly laid out in the Bible. We are unique individuals, taking different actions, living our life as we see fit. Stereotyping is a fancy shmancy word for prejudiced.

To a degree. However...to quote Jesus "By their fruits ye shall know them." It's important to use judgement about people. I'll bet if a Nazi or a "Reformed mormon" dated your daughter, you too would make some judgements about that person.

Having said that, yes we're unique. We have to take reasonable responsibility for the "baggage" that comes along with whatever group we align ourselves with - be that American, Democrat, Athiest or Homosexual. All groups that all have "baggage."
