When I go to the dentist, I get scared and I don't know why. I know that he will be gentle with me, and that the shot will only hurt for a minute, but I still get jittery, and I have tears watering up in my eyes. I am 22 years old and this isn't normal. I have to go by myself on Wensday, and I need to know some ways on how to control my overwhelming feelings. My husband went with me the last 2 times and the first time I was crazy acting like I stated above, but this last time I wasn't as bad and I relaxed a little better. So my question is, what are some ways or things I could do or take to help me relax?

Totally normal girl, trust me I have seen huge football player size guys cry in my chair! My advice to you would be to take an anti anxiety tablet . Gravol, which is sold over the counter in drug stores, helps relieve tension and will make you relax. Or you could ask your dentist to prescribe you something along the lines of ativan which is alike gravol but doctor prescribed and stronger. I am confident this will do the trick for you. Also, have you and your dentist tried the nitrous oxide, I find it helps alot in our office for adults and chilren alike.. Good Luck And don't worry! I hope this helps

I have the same problem...it's anxiety. Only I get physically sick to my stomach practically. Go to an herbal store and find something that will calm your nerves. I got something that has Valvarian Root in it. That may help...don't know how much though.
I hate dentists just as much. Only it's mainly from a horrid childhood dentist who wouldn't let my mom come back when I was only 4 or 5 and yelled at me. The last dentist I went to after not going for 8 years didn't help much by making my teeth cut into my lip by being horribly rough on me. I'm scared to death of dentists.
Don't fret....I'm sure you'd pick a better dentist than I have =P

I was the same like you, i sat at the chair and started to cry like a baby even before dentist touch me lol! all my painful memories came back. Then i didn't go to to the dentist for years i found a new denstis who's really great he know how to work with dental phobial people! He gave me pills to take before i went it to help me relax also if your dentist has laughing gas get it's worth it :-) and it also helped me to go there by myself, before i always went in with a friend and it didn't do any good to me. i can't say i lost the fear completely but i don't cry and don't fell sick to my stomach everytime i go to the dentist. Also tell your dentist if you nervous or scared i did it and it helped! If i could do it, you can too! Good luck

I used to hate going to the dentist, but now the more I go the less I get worried. I was always afraid of the pain. (flash backs from younger years) It seems to be much better now that I am used to this Dentist and have been keeping up on my dental plan.

I don't think your the only one who gets scared. You will be fine, discuss your fear when you see the dentist, he/she should understand.

actually this is normal. that's why there are sedation dentists. i, myself, am not afraid to go and am fine with procedures. i don't get nervous, but when they give me the shot, i feel like i'm going to pass out. i have no problems with needles of any other kind. i don't know what it is. are you getting novocaine on wed? all i can tell you is try to relax. you know what to expect. maybe joke with the dentist to lighten the mood.

maybe you could ask your dentist if he has happy gas that will relax you, we give it to nervous patients at my work.

good luck
