I want to get some wine for hanging out with friends. I want something cheap but something that tastes kind of good. What do you recommend? Maybe merlot?

Virgin Vines (yeah, the record company, airline, etc Virgin) has tasty new Shiraz & Chardonnay that are pretty hip. They are $10 a bottle or so & not at all snooty. Made for what you talking about, hanging out with friends.
Their website is kind of fun too.

Red wines like merlots and cab savs normally are better when paired with food. If you are looking for some nice red wines to drink when hanging with friends, then I would recommend trying a pinot noir, a shiraz, or a syrah. You can find a lot of quality types of these in the $12-18 range.

If you are looking for social white wine, then I would recommend that your try a pinot grigio.

If you are buying something that you want to taste good and you are not used to drinking wine, or want something that most of your friends can try and a lot of them will likely enjoy, stay away from red wines like Merlot.

Among casual wine drinkers, most people don't like red wines.

I would say your best bet is a good Reisling. These white wines are slightly flavored with different sweeteners, usually fruits, to give them a more universally good flavor.

For a good, inexpensive Reisling, check out Mondavi-Woodbridge, Schmitt Sohne, Weber (my favorite cheapie!!), Lindeman's, or Kendall-Jackson. These are all under $10.

Merlot is probably not a good idea for a group of people who don't regularly drink wine. Not to many non-wine drinnkers injoy the dryness of red wines. Try a blush or a pinot grigio. both are very light and sweet...infact, blushes are too sweet for me anymore.

There are plenty of inexpensive Merlot, Cabernet or Zinfandel on the market if you like red wines. The jug wines are pretty good. If you like white wines Chardonnay is good. If you like sweeter whites try Riesling or Gewurztraminer.

There is a good wine called Yellow Tail that is cheap and good. I would have a white and a red when you entertain, that way everybody is happy.

My favourite is Shiraz. It's easy to drink, with or without nibbles. At the moment I like a Chilean brand called Chileno, but anything new world (Australia, Chile, California etc) tends to be consistently good, and reasonably cheap.
